Does every computer audio system need a ground conditioner ?

As computer audiophiles, we use computers as a high end audio source. We like this approach because we’ve had or would like to have some success and hardware and software can be changed whenever we want. And we can keep tweaking indefinitely.

As we all know, reaching this goal is far from easy. We are fortunate in being able to benefit from JPLAY software and JCAT hardware. There is unfortunately one major flaw with using any computer for audio playback which is the noise that the motherboard and PCIe cards generate. This is mostly high frequency noise which is associated with electromagnetic and radiofrequency interference generated by the CPU, RAM and oscillators. In addition, ethernet networks also carry large amounts of noise which can only make matters worse. This is an issue to deal with when using the computer as a digital audio source because the noise floor is inevitably raised. The consequences of a raised noise floor are a loss of naturalness, reduced sound stage, loss of details in the music being played and the introduction of digital glare with its associated agressive highs and listening fatigue. If the noise generated by a computer can be reduced or limited, sound quality will obviously benefit. This is where the ground conditioner comes in. The ground conditioner will connect the motherboard via USB and ethernet network to mains ground, allowing computer and network-generated noise to evacuate progressively. The resulting noise floor is decreased slowly over time and sound quality takes a step towards analogue. It may take several days or a week for the noise floor to become fully lowered. Checking for an effective electrical ground in your home is a good idea beforehand. As with most high-end cables, greater benefit is likely to be obtained in highly resolving audio systems.
